With summer winding down, there are limited opportunities left to enjoy Ohio’s warm weather. Spending time at your local parks is a great way to take advantage of your time outdoors! Parks are a great place to take a walk, a jog or to go on a family outing.

Licking Memorial Health Systems Physical Therapist, Dave Alianiello, said parks are a great place to exercise outdoors. “Some exercises that work well outdoors are: biking, walking, jogging, yoga, outdoor sports such as basketball, baseball or volleyball, or circuit training using playground equipment,” Dave said.

Not only are there many outdoor friendly exercises, but mixing up your exercise routine to incorporate some outdoor activities has a list of additional benefits. Dave said he often notices that a new environment increases focus and attention.

“A different setting may require more awareness and attentiveness to your surroundings,” he said. “You also get to exercise for free as there are no gym fees, improve your balance on different surfaces and get fresh air.”

If you attempt exercising outdoors remember to warm up before and cool down after your activity, wear the appropriate clothing and sunblock, hydrate and avoid extreme temperatures.
