Using Fentanyl Test Strips as a Harm Reduction Practice

The opioid epidemic is an ongoing public health crisis in the United States, and overdoses involving drugs that contain fentanyl are increasing at an alarming rate.  Rapid fentanyl test strips (FTS) are an emerging harm reduction method that may help inform people who use drugs about their risk of fentanyl exposure prior to consumption.

Retiree Spotlight - Dorothy Futrell

Dorothy Futrell worked for Licking Memorial Health Systems for 33 years, beginning her career on her 30th birthday in 1960 as a nurse’s aide.  “Working at LMH was the best thing I have ever done,” Dottie said.  Her fondest memories are of enjoying camaraderie with her coworkers.  “We always found something to laugh and smile about,” she said.  Now 90-years-old, Dorothy is still recognized and appreciated for her sense of humor and giving spirit.

Our LMH Volunteer Spotlight for January/February 2015 features Diana Hufford. Volunteering is important to Diana because it allows her to give back to the community. “When you put your own time in, you appreciate it more,” she said. “Plus, you get to meet so many new people!” When Diana is not volunteering around the Hospital, she most likely is reading or spending time with her four grandchildren. Thank you for your time, Diana!

Local Youth Grows His Own Garden

We want to extend a special congratulation to Active•Fit participant Dagan Ricketts! Dagan spent his summer growing a successful garden in a plot at the 6th Street and Growing Community Gardens. His garden has flourished, and he’s tried new, home-grown fruits and veggies. Way to go Dagan!

Active•Fit Period 2 Drawing

Congratulations to the winners of the Active•Fit Youth Wellness Program Period 2 Drawing! This morning, during a live internet broadcast, LMHS President & CEO Rob Montagnese and Newark Advocate Executive Editor Mike Shearer drew names of Active•Fit participants who had completed their goals during the past 4-month period. Winners received incentive prizes including sport gift cards, bicycles, iPod Nanos with Fitness Software, Nike shoes, and Xbox 360s with fitness software. Active•Fit Period 3 is now in session. Licking Memorial Health Systems Encourages You to Share the Gift of Life

Each day, 18 people die waiting for needed organ transplants, according to Donate Life Ohio, a coalition of the State’s organ, eye and tissue recovery agencies.  In 2013 Licking Memorial Hospital (LMH) joined the Ohio Hospital Association Donate Life Partnership to help save lives by educating the community about the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation and increasing the number of registered donors.  LMH encourages Licking County community members to join in supporting this cause through registration in the Ohio Donor Registry.
