Keep Kids Cool in the Summer Heat

Summer’s hot temperatures can cause many heat-related illnesses, which happen when the body’s temperature control system is overloaded.  Strenuous physical activities during hot weather may put children at risk, but the best defense is prevention.  Children can safely remain active throughout the summer months by following these precautionary measures that can help protect them:

  • Always carry a water bottle
  • Do not drink liquids that contain a lot of sugar or caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration
  • When spending time outside, take frequent breaks in air conditioned or shaded areas
  • Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing
  • Take a cool shower or bath
Heat cramps, which are muscle pains and spasms that often affect the legs and stomach muscles, are the most common of all heat illnesses.  They usually happen shortly after you go inside following a prolonged period of time outdoors.  The best way to get rid of heat cramps is to drink water and rest somewhere cool for a few hours.  The most deadly form of heat illness is heat stroke.  Stemming from untreated heat exhaustion, heat stroke happens when your body no longer can control its temperature and is unable to sweat or cool down.  Symptoms include:
  • High body temperature
  • Confusion or strange behavior
  • Pounding headache
  • Red, hot, dry skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rapid heartbeat, either strong or weak
  • Rapid, shallow breathing
  • Unconsciousness
If you believe someone around you is experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately, and take them to a cool area.  In order to cool the individual, pour water on them or cover them with cool, moist towels, but do not give the victim fluids to drink.
